Dave Zirin on The Rachel Maddow Show
Prof. Harry Edwards at UC Berkeley said decades ago that new stadiums were not the economic boon for a town that proponents claimed. And as a fan, I can tell you that I do not like the "mall-ification" of baseball.
But what I really want to know is "Why is it considered cheating to take PEDs?" whebn it is OK to take a cortisone shot, or even to undergo Tommy John surgery, which nowdays is not just a restorative process; due to advances in rehab, you may come out better than you were normally?
In other words, why do we draw the line where we do in limiting technological aid for anything in our society, especially in the US, which seems to have no problem with everything from actresses getting boob jobs to fighter pilots getting amphetamines for long missions?
there is no scientific evidence to back up the claim that a pitcher is somehow stronger because of it. any such improvements post-surgery are because the player will tend to focus on non-arm related exercises (such as improving core strength) while recuperating.
You may be aware of the recent dissonance emanating out of the proposed Pam American Games stadium in Hamilton, Ontario. Once the games are over the CFL Tiger Cats were proposed as a long-term tenant. The debate is whether the stadium should be built in the west harbour downtown core- city council's preference - or not. The team owner favours a suburban alternative. While both debate which site will 'generate' the most $, the team owner has threatened to pull the 90 year-old franchise out of town.
We have seen this movie before and yet the fact that both sides are wrong about the positive economic impact a stadium generates is missed amid the 'take my ball and leave' posturing. I am no Ti-Cat fan - go Argos! - but a loss of the storied CFL franchise - the only real game in town for Hamilton - would be sad.
