An Idiot Among Us: Paul Shirley on Haiti

In most cases, I've believed strongly in the right of professional athletes to state their political beliefs loudly and proudly. The concept that jocks should just "shut up and play" denigrates our collective freedom to stand up and be heard. But defending an athlete's right to speak is far from defending the political content of their words. Case and point: former NBA journeyman Paul Shirley.

Shirley, who fancies himself as a cultural critic on espn.com, thought it would be a good use of his time to blog about the ongoing disaster in Haiti. First he wrote, "I haven't donated to the Haitian relief effort for the same reason that I don't give money to homeless men on the street.... If I use history as my guide, I don't think the people of Haiti will do much with my money either."

Then he penned an open letter to the Haitian people:

Dear Haitians – First of all, kudos on developing the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, infrastructure, and birth control should be applauded. As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it's possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?

Sincerely, The Rest of the World

I had plans to write a political response to this excrement. I was going to wonder why someone would write something so hurtful while people are still digging their own family members out from the rubble. I was going to marvel at Paul Shirley's ignorance of Haiti's history. I was going to ask if he knew anything about the crushing debt Haiti has lived under for two centuries. I was going to point out the U.S. occupation of the island from 1915-1934, which left behind a 98 percent illiteracy rate, a broken economy, and a U.S.-trained military schooled in the art of repression. I was going to ask if he had any knowledge of the unspeakable brutality of the Duvalier dictatorships. I was going to write that before he talks about "history as a guide," he should dare read some history like The Uses of Haiti by Paul Farmer or The Rainy Season by Amy Wilentz.

I was also going to suggest that he actually try to live on a dollar a day or care for someone H.I.V. positive who has no access to medicine. I wanted to dare him to work for ONE DAY in a garment industry sweatshop. I was going to write all of these things. But instead I think I'm just going to write my own open letter:

Dear Paul Shirley, I only wish your father had taken your own advice and worn a condom. Go to hell.

Sincerely, Dave Zirin

Shirley you must be joking ...

Sorry. It had to be done.

Nonetheless, I could not agree with you more, and I am certainly happy that ESPN cut its ties to Shirley after these idiotic remarks. It is one thing to voice opposition to taxpayer aid to Haiti (though must wonder why such opposition has to be voiced after the death of 100,000+ innocent folks); it's another to voice it in such a terrible, offensive manner.

Over and under until Shirley shows up on FOX? I give it a week ...

Ditto!

Love you Dave!

P.S.
And let's send Mike Greenberg with him.

I expected more

Really? Lazing writing. I expect some intuitive writing from you Mr. Zirin. Instead we get something a 10th grader can write. Nothing about the US over throw of their democratically elected president? Nothing about how ESPN is starting to lean towards the right? Lazy writing indeed.

Well put

Paul Shirley does not deserve this attention. I was appalled at his comments and am glad that the general public has railed against his ignorant, elitist comments...

I'd rather be around a hundred impoverished Haitians than one Paul Shirley

While I can't ignore the fact that Shirley made such comments, I can refuse to respond to the points he made. And my reason for this is the same reason I wouldn't respond to a bum on the street when yelling abrasive and incoherent things.

Amen Dave

Paul Shirley is a true jackass. The best thing to do is ignore him.

The Idiot who speaks.

Honestly Dave, I think your right. How could you disrespect a Nation as a whole, and everything its been through. There are things to say and not to say that letter was ignorant. Paul Shirley it should end Sincerely, the rest of the idiots. And Dave Add my name at the end of your letter.

Hurrah for ESPN!

They did the right thing banning him from further contribution.

Shirley comments on Haiti

Dear Dave:

You refer to the "crushing debt" that Haiti endures but fail to mention the $197 million in disaster relief funds that went missing before the latest disaster.

Surely this bolsters Mr. Shirley's argument that writing a blank check to a country ruled by thiefs and thugs is not the brightest move ...

Shirley commentson haiti

What a hack job by Dave Zirin. Instead of cherry picking the "open letter" why not have a link to the entire blog where Shirley makes his full case. Whether you agree with him or not, he validates his reasons behind what he is writing. Essentially it comes down to it isn' t the rest of the worlds responsiblity to take care of everyone else.
As I am in the military I wouldn't have a problem going to assit in Haiti if ordered because it would be an order. But on my own? I haven't donated a penny, either.
Historically Haiti has had, what, bad luck? Bad decisions? Bad, whatever. But they collectively made them. Shirley was simply stating it is the responsibility of HAITI to take care of Haitians.
But taking the inflamatory part of his blog and not linking to it so one could read it themselves is worse. You are hiding behind your own opinion. At least Shirley is honest about his thoughts.
